US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Greece this week for talks aimed at enhancing strategic and defense cooperation between the two nations. His visit, which began on Tuesday, aligns with the sixth round of the Greece-US Strategic Dialogue, set to take place on Wednesday at the Greek Foreign Ministry. This dialogue will address a range of important topics including regional security, defense, energy, shipping, technology, trade, investment, and law enforcement.

A central focus of Rubio’s discussions is expected to be defense cooperation. This includes potential agreements on the purchase of missiles and self-protection systems for Greece’s F-35 aircraft and upgraded F-16 Viper jets. Additionally, the talks are anticipated to cover support for military equipment, such as Black Hawk and MH-60R helicopters. These discussions underline the strategic intent to bolster Greece’s defense capabilities in partnership with the United States.

Beyond defense, the dialogue will encompass other agreements including the protection of archaeological materials, collaboration between the Greek Armed Forces and the US National Guard, and the mutual recognition of seafarers’ professional certificates. This reflects a comprehensive approach to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors.

Rubio is also scheduled to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Their discussions are likely to focus on reducing dependence on China while exploring opportunities to expand cooperation between Greece and the United States. This aspect of the visit signals a deliberate effort to diversify strategic partnerships amid shifting global dynamics.
