Germany has affirmed its support for Montenegro’s bid to join the European Union, highlighting the country’s significant progress in meeting accession requirements. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul commended Montenegro’s efforts during a meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic, emphasizing that Montenegro could serve as a model for other Western Balkan nations aspiring to join the EU.
The discussions took place as part of the Berlin Process, an initiative aimed at fostering cooperation among Western Balkan countries, held in Montenegro. The meeting also included EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos and focused on topics such as regional cooperation, reconciliation, and necessary reforms.
Montenegro has been on a path toward EU membership for over two decades and is among several Western Balkan countries seeking to join the bloc. The nation aims to complete the accession process in the coming years, aligning itself with EU standards and regulations.
Wadephul underscored that countries meeting the EU’s membership criteria and demonstrating a continued commitment to reforms should be given a clear pathway to membership. This endorsement from Germany could potentially strengthen Montenegro’s position in its EU accession journey.
