Greece has decided to keep its Patriot missile battery stationed in Saudi Arabia, following an agreement between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The decision comes at the request of Saudi Arabia and signifies Greece’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Kingdom’s air defense capabilities. This deployment, which began in 2021, has played a crucial role in intercepting Houthi drones and missiles aimed at Saudi energy infrastructure.

During a recent meeting in Riyadh, Prime Minister Mitsotakis condemned the attacks against Saudi Arabia and reiterated Greece’s support for the Kingdom’s security. The leaders emphasized their strategic partnership and explored avenues for further cooperation in defense, energy, and digital connectivity.

Regional security emerged as a significant theme in their discussions, particularly concerning developments involving Iran and the safeguarding of international shipping routes. Mitsotakis underscored the importance of keeping these routes open and secure to ensure the smooth flow of global trade.

Additionally, the leaders reviewed progress on the East to Med Data Corridor project, which aims to enhance digital connectivity between Europe and Asia through Greece and Saudi Arabia. They also discussed preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Greece-Saudi Arabia Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation, reflecting on the advancements since its first session in January 2025.
