Péter Szijjártó, the former Hungarian Foreign Minister, has stepped down from his position in parliament to embrace a new role with Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. Announcing his decision through social media, Szijjártó revealed he had accepted “a highly prestigious offer” to join one of the world’s foremost companies. He will now be responsible for overseeing external relations and spearheading the development of new business areas at BYD.
BYD, recognized as the global leader in new-energy vehicle production, is significantly enhancing its footprint in Hungary by establishing a major manufacturing facility in Szeged. This initiative, one of Hungary’s most notable economic ventures, received backing from Szijjártó during his tenure in government. The company has distinguished itself in the electric vehicle market, with over 4.5 million vehicles sold worldwide, surpassing several of its key competitors in recent years.
Within Hungary’s political circles, Szijjártó’s resignation was addressed by Fidesz party leaders, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Discussions regarding his departure have been ongoing in recent weeks, and the party’s executive committee is anticipated to make decisions about parliamentary group adjustments soon.
This development underscores the strengthening economic relations between Hungary and China, particularly in the realms of the automotive and electric vehicle industries. As Szijjártó transitions to his new role, these ties are expected to deepen, fostering further collaboration and growth.
