Canada’s Reagan ad sparks trade talk termination by Trump

by admin477351

A Canadian ad featuring Ronald Reagan has sparked the “termination” of all US-Canada trade talks by President Trump. The ad, from Ontario, criticized US tariffs.
Trump took to truth social media to blast the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent,” accusing Canada of “egregious behavior” and attempting to interfere with the US supreme court.
The ad was designed to protest the 35% tariffs on Canadian goods that have hit Ontario’s economy. It uses a clip of Reagan saying, “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
This move, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, freezes the vital trade relationship. Canadian PM Mark Carney said he was “disappointed” and vowed to find other ways to lower trade barriers.
The ad’s use of the 1987 speech has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They claim the “selective audio” misrepresents the full context, where Reagan was also justifying his own tariffs on japan.
