Trump to Iran: The Clock Is Ticking — Get Serious or Lose the Chance

by admin477351

In a pointed social media post on Thursday, President Donald Trump told Iran it was running out of time to strike a deal, warning that the consequences of delay would be both severe and permanent. Trump claimed on Truth Social that Iran’s negotiators were privately pleading for an agreement even as their government publicly dismissed Washington’s proposal as something merely under consideration. He characterised this contradiction as evidence of Tehran’s weakened position.

Washington’s 15-point ceasefire proposal forms the basis of current negotiations. The plan includes the removal of sanctions as a major concession to Iran, balanced against demands that Tehran abandon its nuclear programme, restrict its missile development, and allow unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy supplies. Iran has publicly rejected these terms, though it has not entirely severed diplomatic contact.

Iran’s state media has aired a rival set of terms. Tehran wants protection for its officials from military strikes, guarantees that no future war will be waged against the country, compensation for the devastation caused by the current conflict, and recognised sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These demands are seen in Washington as fundamentally incompatible with the American framework in their present form.

The war has been ruinous for the people of the region. More than 1,500 lives have been lost in Iran, and the toll in Lebanon stands at nearly 1,100. Dozens have also been killed in Israel, 13 US soldiers have died, and millions of civilians in Iran and Lebanon have been displaced, creating a humanitarian emergency of significant scale.

Trump’s warning that there would be “no turning back” once a critical point is reached is the clearest signal yet that Washington is approaching the limits of its patience. Analysts say the outcome of the next round of communications between the two sides could determine whether the conflict spirals further or begins to wind down. The stakes have rarely been higher.
