Bolsonaro Blames Hallucinations for Attempt to Open Ankle Monitor

Former president Jair Bolsonaro has said he only tampered with his electronic monitor because he suffered a hallucination that made him think it was bugged.
Authorities arrested him early Saturday after detecting interference with the device used to track his movements. Officials suspected he was preparing to seek protection at a foreign embassy.
Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since his conviction for leading a coup attempt. His 27-year prison term was expected to be enforced within days of the incident.
At Sunday’s hearing, Bolsonaro said two medications—an antidepressant and a painkiller—triggered paranoia and confusion. He admitted attempting to pry open the device with a soldering iron.
Political analysts questioned the credibility of his explanation, highlighting inconsistencies with earlier statements. International figures also offered minimal comments on the case.
