Global Oil in Crisis But Trump’s Eyes Are Fixed on Iran’s Nuclear Program

While the global oil market descends into what the IEA has called its worst supply crisis in history, President Trump’s attention is directed elsewhere — at the nuclear weapons program he is determined to prevent Iran from completing. Trump stated this directly on Truth Social Thursday, saying that stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions is “far greater” in importance to him than the oil price spike. The statement came as crude topped $100 per barrel and Gulf producers cut output by around 10 million barrels per day.
The magnitude of the supply disruption is historically significant. Ten million barrels per day represents roughly 10% of global oil demand, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has compounded the loss of supply. Brent crude gained as much as 10% Thursday to briefly surpass $100 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate climbed toward $96 before retreating. The IEA released 400 million barrels from emergency reserves, and the US announced a separate 172-million-barrel Strategic Petroleum Reserve drawdown.
Trump’s Truth Social post argued that as the world’s largest oil producer, the United States actually earns more when oil prices rise. He used this point as a launching pad to explain his real concern: preventing Iran — an “evil Empire” in his characterization — from developing nuclear weapons and destabilizing the Middle East and the world. He pledged to never allow this to happen under his watch.
The declaration has strategic consequences. It indicates that the administration does not view the oil crisis as a reason to seek a rapid diplomatic resolution. Instead, the conflict will continue until Tehran’s nuclear program is addressed. Trump reinforced this posture Wednesday, telling reporters that the US has delivered extraordinary military force against Iran and is not done. His earlier suggestions of an imminent end to the conflict remain difficult to reconcile with this stance.
Trump also expressed no concern about Iran attacking American soil. Markets continue to grapple with profound uncertainty as the conflict persists. Whether Trump’s nuclear-first framing will translate into a sustainable military and diplomatic strategy remains one of the defining questions of the current global crisis.
