Spotify is taking steps to address the rise of AI-generated music on its platform by implementing new measures to identify such content. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings for AI-created identities will feature an “AI persona” label. This initiative aims to help listeners differentiate between real musicians and artificial artist identities, while also protecting human artists from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
In addition to labeling, AI personas will be automatically excluded from personalized recommendations. Spotify is focusing on ensuring transparency as generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music scene. The platform will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated, but it will also employ human reviewers and AI-driven tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.
The decision to implement these changes comes amid a rapid increase in AI-generated music. Spotify previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over the course of a year, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms.
With AI’s role in music creation growing, Spotify recognizes the importance of transparency for its users. The company believes listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether the artist behind a track is a human or an AI-generated identity, prompting these new measures to ensure clarity and support authentic musicians.
