The company highlighted the rapid improvement in AI systems’ ability to autonomously perform complex tasks, which could potentially lead to “recursive self-improvement”—a phase where AI systems significantly enhance their own abilities with minimal human input.

Such advancements could pose substantial challenges to oversight, safety, and governance, Anthropic warned. The company suggested that an industry-wide, temporary pause could give governments, researchers, and society the necessary time to establish protective measures and gain a deeper understanding of the ramifications of increasingly powerful AI technologies. This proposal comes in the wake of increased scrutiny on Anthropic’s advanced AI model, Mythos, which has demonstrated the capability to identify software vulnerabilities, raising alarms about the potential misuse of highly sophisticated AI tools.

The company noted that if only one firm were to halt progress, it would have a limited effect if other competitors continued to advance at the same rate.
