Greenland’s Parliamentary Representative Accuses Trump of Spreading Lies

by admin477351

Aaja Chemnitz, who represents Greenland in Denmark’s parliament, has directly accused President Trump of “spreading lies about Chinese and Russian warships” near the Arctic territory, contradicting the president’s primary justification for seeking to acquire Greenland. Her accusation challenges the foundation of Trump’s national security argument and characterizes his territorial ambitions as based on fabricated threats rather than genuine security concerns.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Russian and Chinese ships are “all over” Greenland’s coastline, creating vulnerabilities that Denmark supposedly cannot address. He has used these alleged foreign naval activities as justification for his assertion that the United States needs control of Greenland for national security purposes. China’s foreign ministry has forcefully rejected Trump’s claims, urging Washington to “stop using the so-called China threat as an excuse to seek personal gain.”
Chemnitz went beyond merely disputing Trump’s claims by urging Greenlanders to take the president’s threats seriously and “go into preparation mode.” Her warning suggests that despite the falsity of Trump’s justifications, his territorial ambitions represent a genuine threat that Greenland’s population should actively prepare to confront. This dual message—that Trump’s reasoning is dishonest but his intentions are serious—reflects the complexity of Greenland’s strategic situation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued an unprecedented warning that any US military action against Greenland would completely destroy NATO and eighty years of transatlantic security cooperation. Her stark ultimatum came after Trump’s military intervention in Venezuela, where American forces seized President Nicolas Maduro and announced indefinite US control. The Venezuelan operation has provided a concerning precedent that has amplified European fears about Trump’s willingness to act militarily.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen publicly demanded Trump cease his pressure campaign and respect international law, while maintaining openness to dialogue through proper diplomatic channels. European nations have unified in support of Denmark, with the EU, Britain, France, and Nordic countries all affirming that only Greenland and Denmark could determine the territory’s future. The crisis escalated when Katie Miller, wife of Trump adviser Stephen Miller, posted imagery depicting Greenland in American flag colors, which Nielsen condemned as disrespectful to diplomatic norms and territorial sovereignty.
