Dozens of fire engines and ambulances rushed to a chaotic scene in Delhi on Monday night after a car explosion killed eight people and injured 19. The fire service reported that the blast, which happened near the Red Fort, started a large fire that engulfed multiple vehicles. Emergency responders worked quickly to contain the blaze and transport the injured to a government hospital.
The explosion took place just before 7 pm at a busy intersection. Police Commissioner Satish Golcha explained that a car had stopped at a red light outside the Red Fort metro station when it detonated. “An explosion happened in that vehicle,” Golcha said, adding that the force “damaged nearby vehicles,” including over a dozen cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles.
The aftermath was broadcast on Indian TV news channels, showing a car with its doors blown off, mangled bodies, and people screaming in panic. Witnesses provided grim accounts. One resident, Om Prakash Gupta, saw “several vehicles on fire” and “body parts all over.” Another witness described the “very strong explosion” and the shock waves it sent through nearby buildings.
The investigation is being led by the federal Home Ministry, which controls the Delhi Police. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and stated that the cause is not yet known, pending forensic analysis. He assured a thorough probe, and the car’s registered owner has reportedly been detained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences. In response to the incident, a high alert has been declared for major transportation hubs and the cities of Mumbai and the state of Uttar Pradesh, as security concerns mount.
