Greece has taken on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, marking its second and concluding term in this leadership role during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will oversee the council’s activities throughout the month.

As president, Greece is poised to navigate a range of pressing global issues. Among the significant topics on the agenda are the ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating situation in Gaza, tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, and conflicts in Sudan. Additionally, the council will address the security crisis in Haiti, where an international security force is aiding efforts to curb violence and stabilize the region ahead of upcoming elections.

This period of leadership also coincides with the critical discussions regarding the selection of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a pivotal role in this process, recommending a candidate to the General Assembly. The newly appointed secretary-general is expected to begin their term on January 1, 2027.

Greece’s presidency comes at a time of heightened international tensions and complex geopolitical challenges, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement and decision-making within the Security Council. As the council navigates these multifaceted issues, Greece’s leadership will be crucial in shaping the outcomes of the discussions and resolutions.
